Recipe, which genuinely works

An olive oil cake written out properly, because a Recipe specimen that nobody could cook tests nothing.

This recipe is real and it works. There is no fictional restaurant attached to it and no invented chef. It was written out properly because a Recipe specimen nobody could actually cook would be testing the shape of the markup and nothing else.

Olive oil cake

One bowl, no mixer, and better on the second day than the first.

Ingredients

  • 180ml olive oil, something you would happily eat on bread
  • 200g caster sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 240ml whole milk
  • 250g plain flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • Half a teaspoon of fine salt
  • Zest of one orange

Method

  1. Heat the oven to 175C. Line a 23cm round tin.
  2. Whisk the oil and sugar together until they stop looking separate, about a minute.
  3. Add the eggs one at a time, whisking after each. Add the milk and the orange zest.
  4. Sift in the flour, baking powder and salt. Fold until just combined and no further.
  5. Pour into the tin and bake 45 to 50 minutes, until a skewer comes out with a crumb or two on it.
  6. Cool in the tin for 15 minutes, then turn out. Wait until it is properly cool before cutting it.

What this specimen is testing

Recipe is the type with the widest gap between the markup a page carries and the experience a person gets. It is also, with Product, one of the two types where invented ratings are effectively standard practice, and where the rating is doing most of the work in the result.

This one carries none. The nutrition block is absent too, because nobody has measured this cake and a plausible-looking set of numbers would be a guess presented as analysis.
